Claims as to the whereabouts of the Illinois “headquarters,” or listing of the major players is also disputed. One abolitionist described the Theophilus branch of the Quincy Mission as Station no. 1, that “soon became the special object of hatred by the slaveholders in Missouri.”[5] Others described Station no. 1 as the Owen Lovejoy home in Bureau County, or the communities of Sparta or Brighton as the “headquarters.” The Halliday Hotel in Cairo advertised the use of its premises by General Ulysses S. Grant, and Peter Steward graciously accepted the term of “President.” John Hassack declared himself the conductor along the great “tunnel route,” and John Cross was described by a veteran as “a regular old war horse that laid out the Underground Railroad from Quincy to Chicago.”[6] The reputation of Owen Lovejoy helps to confirm his credentials because of his more public political career, and the fact that his brother was the famous abolitionist publisher Elijah Lovejoy, who was notoriously murdered by a mob of pro-slavery men in Alton, Illinois.
